Both Uses of
staunch

The Hunger Games
Uses with a meaning too rare to warrant foucs:

p. 289.6 *staunch = stop
- I have no bandage, nothing to staunch the flow of blood from his calf.
p. 338.2
Definitions:
-
(1)
(staunch as in: a staunch ally) firm and dependable especially in loyalty
-
(2)
(meaning too rare to warrant focus) More rarely, staunch can mean water-tight as for a ship that does not leak.
Staunch is also sometimes used to mean stanch (to stop the flow of something--especially blood), but stanch is the generally recommended word for that meaning.
